27A- Reading Reflection No. 3

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
I chose to read Coco Chanel by Lisa Chaney. The general theme of this book is basically that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. Gabrielle Chanel truly started from the bottom- from a little girl suffering childhood abuse and neglect to a very successful entrepreneur and business owner.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

Similarly to how we learn in this class to not give up after failure, Gabrielle resonates with this too. Failure is a part of success, and you cannot have success without failure. Her perseverance is a skill that we learn is crucial to be a successful entrepreneur.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

Since what stuck out most to me was Gabrielle's rise to success in spite of all odds against her. I would like to see an exercise where students were asked to make a list of 10 living female entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, I believe many would not be able to name more than a few women. This book screamed female empowerment to me, and I feel an exercise like this could help prove what we already know to be true in society- women aren't taken as seriously as men.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I was especially touched by how Gabrielle revolutionized women's dress. Her brand is made by women, and for women which is so empowering in a world with so many male dominated fields. I am inspired by her ability to use her hardships to better herself and become the business woman she is today.

  1. Hi Skylar! Gabrielle Chanel sounds like a great role model! I really like your assignment idea. I think it would be a great addition to the course. I found it very inspiring that she overcame such a hard time through her childhood and was able to grow into a powerful woman today. Overall, this was a great post and this biography seemed very intriguing .

  2. Hi Skylar,

Great job on your blog post! I didn't know that Gabrielle Chanel had such a rough and heartbreaking upbringing; knowing this definitely makes me have a lot more respect and admiration for all that she has done. Being a feminist myself, I certainly agree that we need to do more to capitalize upon and publicize the success of women in all walks of life- not just in entrepreneurship. I believe that's just a part of being a good human, and that we all owe it to one another to do so. Kindness and empowerment always wins over inequality! Keep up the great work!

  3. Hi Skylar. This book seems very interesting. I have to admit that I love a good story about starting from the bottom. It seems like Chanel is a perfect example of this. It is amazing to hear how she is a woman who built a business for women while changing the industry at the same time. This just shows that we can find inspiration in even the darkest of places. Great post Skylar!

  4. Hey Skylar. I agree with you and the book you chose to read in that while it may take more than just hard work and dedication to succeed at something, those two are definitely necessary in completing hard tasks or achieving challenging dreams. Stories of people who came from nothing and ended up something, like the one in this novel, really inspire me to be the best version of myself that I can possibly be. Lastly, I agree with you in that this lesson very much so relates to the class. Nice work.
