6A- Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends
Economic Opportunities
1. The United States-China trade war is an ongoing economic conflict. These trade barriers and increased protection subsequently caused higher tariffs and less output. Trump said his planned tariffs on Chinese imports would make the United States "a much stronger, much richer nation." I however, find it very concerning that these tariffs will strongly affect Chinese imports which are a major part of the products we use and enjoy in the states. I understand wanting to instead make some of those products in the states to make a profit, but cutting off imports completely sounds ludicrous and detrimental to me.
2. The outbreak of the coronavirus could trigger a rise in global food prices. This is because many people in China are worried and stocking up on a lot of food so they can stay indoors and not risk getting sick. The country could possibly have a shortage because of this pandemic and could need imports from other countries to help feed the Chinese population.
Regulatory Opportunities
3. Replacing plastic straws with paper straws is something that many restaurants in Gainesville have had to start doing. Although I understand this is better for the environment, many times those same facilities will give us a styrofoam or plastic cup and lid. I personally really dislike paper straws because they dissolve in the water and it gets really gross, so I just have a package of plastic straws in my car glovebox.
4. The marijuana industry is a massive industry that is only growing. The legalization of marijuana is also steadily passing in different countries and states. I feel it is only a matter of time before recreational marijuana is legal in all 50 states. This would benefit the American economy because these products would be heavily taxed.

Farmers, especially in Iowa have an issue with the Trump trade war. Their window of opportunity to fix the issue and get back on track to bringing in business opportunities and revenue is shrinking. The only possible solution to this issue is to propose business solutions for farmers and families who are suffering through the impact from these economic policies.
ReplyDeleteHey Skylar.
ReplyDeleteI love your third opportunity since it is such a recent craze about the usage of these paper straws. May people hate how they break up after being wet for too long, but a lot of people recognize what this is for, so they want another alternative instead of paper straws, maybe something else. I do agree that we are still drinking out of a plastic cup or lid and that is very counter-productive if they are trying to help the environment, and do half the job.
