7A- Testing the Hypothesis Part 1

Issue:
When you are writing an assignment and the pen's ink bleeds through to the other page.

Who
The individual writing the assignment.
What
When the ink bleeds through to the other page, you are then unable to use the backside of that sheet.
Why
This wastes paper, and looks messy.

Hypothesis/Pushing the boundaries of Who, What, Why:

Who
I think other people share this issue with me. I suppose the "bleeding" could vary depending on how hard each individual writes.
What
Are all pens a problem or is it just ink pens? Is it just because I am writing too hard?
Why
Some people may not mind that they cannot use the backside of the sheet, maybe they only use the front side anyway.

5 Interviews:

  • 19 year old male
-Rarely happens to him because he usually writes with pencil
-Feels the issue is more prominent when he is using a pilot pen specifically
-When he is using pen, and it bleeds through to the other side, he gets frustrated.
-He suggests using a pencil as a solution to the problem. However, sometimes you need to use pen by requirement of the professor.

  • 29 year old female
-She says this always happens to her and it annoys her quite a bit.
-Avoids using ink pen when writing in a packet.
-Uses pencil to do math.
-Doesn't quite have a solution but suggests using gel pens instead of ballpoint pens to solve the bleeding issue.
  • 60 year old father
-He says he encounters this issue daily.
-Has resorted to only ever using the front side of a sheet of paper.
-Ink pen is his preferred writing tool.
-The solution, he says, is writing slower and softer but most people rush and write more rough.
  • 20 year old female
-She says she rarely encounters this issue because her writing tool of choice is a gel pen.
-She brought up the issue of when you are writing with a mechanical pencil and it pokes a hole through your sheet. This is another issue, but still, this has definitely happened to me.
-Only uses ink pen if she knows she does not need the other side for anything.
-She cannot think of a solution other then switching your writing tool.

  • 25 year old sister
-She says she encounters this problem nearly daily but it doesn't really bother her because she works from home and does not need to turn anything in.
-When taking notes or writing something she wants to look nice and not bleed through she will use something other then an ink pen.
-She says the solution is not pushing down as much while your writing, or using a different writing tool.

Summary

I learned that other people share this bug with me, and each person handles it differently. Some that I interviewed stayed away from ink pens all together, and only used pencil. Others swore by ink pens and had their own ways of managing the pen bleeding through. Like not pushing down as hard, or substituting your ink pen for a gel pen.

  1. Hi Skylar. I have to admit that I share this bug too when I use ball point pens. However, like some of your interviewees, I simply resort to using pencil for most of my work and I usually avoid ball point pens as much as I can. Great job with your interviews, they look to be very thorough. I really enjoyed your post!

  2. Hey Skylar.
I have had this happen to me countless times, it is crazy how many of these little issues affect so many people everyday. I on the other hand hate using pencils, so I will always use a pen, although this may be an issue at times, I would love a solution to fix this problem; and believe there are many opportunities available to fix this issue.
