13A- Reading Reflection No. 1
I chose to read Miracles Happen by Mary Kay Ash for this reading reflection.
1.) I was most surprised to learn that Mary Kay Ash was enduring a series of obstacles just before starting her business. Her father was sick and she had lost her husband just one month before kickstarting her business. I find it very inspiring that although she was going through hardships, her faith in God, and in herself remained strong. I admire the author's perseverance and ability to remain positive throughout even the difficult points in her life. There isn't anything that I dislike about the author, however in my personal opinion it can get a little annoying when people constantly reference their belief system. This is her autobiography though, so she can write what she wants. As mentioned previously, Mary Kay Ash faced adversity when her father fell sick and she lost her husband. Throughout these hard times, Mary remains optimistic which is admirable.
2.) Some competencies that are extremely apparent in the author's writing are: positivity, perseverance, and faith. Mary was able to become an extremely successful business woman through her own hard work and strength.
3.) One thing that I found a little confusing was in chapter 6 when the author says to "put on a happy face regardless of the circumstance. While I understand what Mary is trying to portray in saying this, I do not find it practical as hiding your true emotions can cause anxiety to build up. To an extent, "fake it till you make it", is what the message is in this chapter and I am having difficulty understanding how this would be beneficial.
4.) First I would ask Mary, "Did you find being a female entrepreneur, it is more difficult for women to succeed in the field?" I would also like to ask, "Where did you learn to be so organized? Was this instilled by your parents?"
5.) Undoubtably, Mary Kay Ash is a firm advocate for hard work. With all she has accomplished, and how much wisdom she has to offer, I would find it very hard to believe that she does not believe in hard work after reading her autobiography. I do share this opinion with the author. I was taught from a young age to work hard and to always give everything I do in life my all.

Hi Skylar,
ReplyDeleteWell done with your blog post! It was very interesting reading about your thoughts on Mary Kay- I had not known that she had had such a tragic and troubling past, especially so soon before starting her own business. In a way, I've always found that in life, sometimes it's the lows that can inspire change and elevate us to new heights. This was something that I found when I read about Elon Musk, as he had a difficult childhood, yet he was able to work on himself and pursue his dreams despite it. This is definitely something we can all learn from- perspective is priceless!
Hi Skylar. I did not choose this biography myself, so it was interesting and nice to see what some of these other choices were like. I find this one to be very inspiring, the fact that Mary Kay had such a rough past, but clearly used that negative energy to eventually create a positive life starting and running her own business and having great success with it. I love that attitude she brings because it is the exact attitude I tend to have on everything I am involved in and pursuing in life.
